The viruses within: Uninvited guests that just will not leave

The viruses within: Uninvited guests that just will not leave

Whilst many viruses keep their visits to our bodies short, some decide to move in permanently, causing trouble for life. I will discuss how they do this, how they affect our health, and their impact on the wider animal world.

We are very aware of viruses when we are ill with influenza or Covid-19, but did you know that you (yes, you reading this now) always carry multiple viruses with you, even when you are healthy? Some will be with you for life!

Certain viruses have developed such mastery that after infecting you, they can hide within your body and be your constant companion, popping out for unpleasant visits when you least expect it.

You might be familiar with their work if you have experienced cold sores (forkølelsessår) or shingles (helvedesild).I will take you on a journey into the mysterious world of these hidden passengers: Say hej to the herpesviruses.

What makes them different from a passing viral infection like a cold? How do they manage to tag along for so long? How does this impact our health? And why are they important for salmon farming and elephants in zoos?
