Plants and microbes: The real life savers!
What do bacteria, plants, and fungi have in common? They all produce compounds with vital applications in medicine, agriculture, and cosmetics. The world's most prescribed antibiotic, penicillin, is derived from mold!
Natural products, also called NPs, are compounds derived from living organisms. They are produced through a secondary metabolism, meaning that they are not essential for growth, but improve the ability of organisms to survive and adapt to their environment.
You might have heard of flavonoids. Together with terpenoids and alkaloids, they are widely produced by plants. Flavonoids protect plants from UV radiation. By collecting plants and isolating these flavonoids, we utilize their antioxidant activity in the design of new medications for humans. Just mimic nature!
