Dishonesty in Romantic Relationships: Why Do We Lie To, Cheat On, or Keep Secrets from Our Partners?

Dishonesty in Romantic Relationships: Why Do We Lie To, Cheat On, or Keep Secrets from Our Partners?

Why do people lie, cheat, or keep secrets from their partners? I study couples to understand why this happens and how it affects trust, intimacy and overall relationship happiness over time.

This lecture explores dishonesty in romantic relationships using real-life stories, surveys, and long-term studies of couples. It shows the many ways people are dishonest, from small lies to major betrayals, why they do it, and what it does to intimacy, communication, and relationship satisfaction, both now and in the future.

You will learn how dishonesty is spotted, how it shapes everyday interactions, and what it means for the future of the relationship. You’ll gain practical insights on building trust, fostering open communication, managing conflicts, and understanding the delicate balance between honesty, secrecy, and forgiveness in romantic relationships.
