To infinity! And perhaps beyond…?
Infinity is so vast that it is unclear how we can talk about it. In this lecture, we will not only learn a tool to measure it, but we will also attempt to create something bigger.
To begin the lecture, we will use the metaphor of Hilbert’s hotel, a hotel with infinitely many rooms. This will encapsulate the infinite, and we can check whether other infinities we construct are bigger or not. Here, participants will be able to use this tool in an example.
Towards the end, I will present one of the most important arguments in mathematics due to Cantor, and perhaps some surprising consequences.
There will be room for discussion during the lecture, so the audience can understand the abstract ideas involved. Let’s explore infinity together!
