Nostalgia: Here’s why we love the past in times of crisis

Nostalgia is everywhere in pop culture and social media. But it is also a political promise to return to a better past. The talk will outline how nostalgia works, how it is politicized, and why nostalgia is not the problem.

The comeback of vinyl and analog photography and the return of 90s fashion. These show how we are longing for the past as a way to connect with one another.

However, in recent years, nostalgia has also been criticized for exploiting our emotions to make money with all sorts of products, and it has become hyper-political, leading us to Vikings, Brexit, and Trump.

The talk will outline how nostalgia works psychologically, how it has been commercialized, and politicized. I will also talk about why nostalgia itself is actually not the problem, but an important marker of how society is doing.
