Videogames are (your) culture too: the most important things to know about digital games

Videogames are more than just entertainment, they are part of our culture. Why do games matter to both children and adults, and what should we know to understand their role in today’s society?

Videogames play a central role in modern culture. Millions of people spend time and money on games, and they are no longer just something you do alone. Games have become social spaces where young people meet, communicate, and express themselves in new ways.

Drawing on more than 20 years of research, this talk explains why videogames matter and how they shape our lives. Through clear examples, it shows how games can support creativity, learning, and social connection, but also how gaming cultures and communities can create challenges.

The talk is aimed at both gamers and non-gamers and requires no prior knowledge. Whether you play daily or haven’t touched a game since Pac-Man, you will gain a better understanding of how videogames influence our culture. How do games contribute to a good life? And how can we deal with the problems they sometimes create?
