Wedding Celebrations among Immigrant Communities from Turkey in Denmark

Wedding Celebrations among Immigrant Communities from Turkey in Denmark

Based on my research among immigrant communities from Turkey in Denmark, the lecture will show the diversity of traditions and cultural, religious and gender norms that influence couples’ marriage stories and processes.

Wedding rituals and celebrations are life-cycle events that showcase cultural and religious identities. They are influenced by understandings of femininity, gender norms and aesthetic preferences.
With this perspective, you will learn about my research project, which investigates the changing dynamics and the diversity of the stories behind weddings among immigrant communities from Turkey in Denmark.

In this lecture, I will share my insights about the intersections of family values, religious and gender norms, emotions and social factors in couples’ stories. You will also learn about the feminine values of the bride, that are shaped by concerns of beauty, aesthetics and modesty/immodesty.
