Wetlands: A forgotten ecosystem in the climate crisis

Wetlands: A forgotten ecosystem in the climate crisis

Wetlands have an under-explored role to play in the global climate crisis. In this presentation, we will take you on a journey to discover the science of wetlands and their natural superpowers.

We are going to talk about the wonderful world of wetlands – ecosystems often overlooked in the fight against climate change. We generally talk about forests as the most important natural ecosystem for CO2 storage. But actually, wetlands have a unique feature that allows them to store much more carbon than forests on far less space.

We are three researchers from the Global Wetland Center at Copenhagen University, investigating the hydrology and biogeochemistry that make these wetlands so interesting in a climate perspective. Together with you, we will explore what goes on inside wetlands, above and below ground, and how these small-scale processes add up to large effects on global climate change.
