What health tells us about opportunity across generations

What health tells us about opportunity across generations

How can health shape inequality in education across generations? By drawing on evidence from Denmark, this lecture examines how parental and family health shape intergenerational educational mobility.

Based on a study, this lecture will explore how health and education are linked across generations. As the research shows, parents’ education shapes their children’s level of education, and this link is changed when families experience health problems.

In this lecture, we will talk about these main findings of the study and the research design. Furthermore, I will discuss what this reveals about why educational advantages and disadvantages persist over time.

I will also reflect what these findings mean for social mobility and how policies that seek to reduce inequality by supporting families affected by health issues.
